Seals Design Leader (SDL)

Location: Burnaby, British Columbia

 Who are we?

Svante is a rapidly growing clean energy technology company making commercial-scale carbon capture and removal a reality and enabling global industries to play offense in the fight against climate change that will accelerate the global transition to a lower-carbon economy. The growing success of our company is owed to our commitment to our people, our emphasis on our values, and our innovative technology. Passion is put into what we do every day.

The heart of Svante’s Carbon Capture Technology involves directing various gas streams to adsorbent beds. These gas streams are required to switch as the adsorbent beds progress through each phase of a full cycle. Connecting the gas flows to the adsorbent beds requires a coupling methodology with associated sealing. Appropriate sealing is critical to the success of a Svante carbon capture system and is therefore designated as a core center of competency.

Who are you?

You feel passionate about changing the world and creating a better future for the next generations. You believe that climate change needs to be a bigger focus in order to protect our planet. You want to have a career with a high level of purpose that gives you opportunities to bring in innovation, work in collaborative teams and develop your knowledge. When faced with an issue you enjoy the problem solving journey and looking for the most effective solution. Your colleagues are able to rely on you for support and to deliver on your promises. You multiply your value by developing those around you by leading and coaching through the company vision, mission and values.

The Seals Design Leader (SDL) has delivery responsibility for the design and definition of seals used in Svante Rotary Adsorbent Machines (RAM’s). You are expected to have an excellent knowledge of various seal design technologies and have the background to specify geometries, materials, and activation methodology.

The SDL will recruit, develop and lead a team that will capture customer and sub-system requirements for various seals and creates and evaluate potential concept solutions using state-of-the-art analysis and simulation techniques. Under the guidance of the Machine Product Manager and in collaboration with the Core Product Technology Leader the other technology group centers of competency, the SDL will evolve concept designs into prototype and production designs using a combination of simulation and physical testing. The SDL will also take ultimate responsibility for the validation sign-off of all RAM sealing components.

Working within the framework of Svante Values and Goals the SDL and team will be responsible to deliver all technical data required for scoping, development, design, manufacture, and implementation of RAM seals. As the SDL you will be responsible to ensure that this technical data is delivered in the form of technology packages to machine development teams to meet project requirements. In collaboration with the Research and Development team and the Process team, the SDL will establish requirements for the seals utilized in various classes of RAM’s.

The Role: The Seals Design Leader (SDL)

The SDL will supply engineers and technology packages directly to the Ram Product Leads (RPL’s) and will take sign-off responsibility for these packages. As a resource to the RPL, the Seals Design Team will translate the core product technology designs into manufacturing drawings and documentation with qualified fabrication partners/suppliers and manage the supply chain to deliver RAM seal projects. Together with Supply Chain and the RPL, the Seals Design Team will control and manage the suppliers of components and sub-system machine parts and manage the build, integration, and testing of the RAM seals at the machine manufacturers site (Factory Acceptance Tests). The SDL will control and manage design for manufacture, assembly, and all aspects of verification for RAM Seals.

The Seals Design Team will create service documentation, and in coordination with the RPL train customer service personnel and support machine breakdowns within the warranty period and, potentially, beyond as a revenue and profit center.

You, as the SDL, will take personal responsibility for the morale of their development team and ensures that the team at all times represents Svante’s Goals and Values to internal and external customers and suppliers.

Competencies required:

  • Experience: At least 15 years of technology development in a leadership role within rapidly growing new technology fields. Ideally, this should be within technologies similar to Svante. Proven experience of advancing technology and teams from an immature to an advanced state is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge: Intimate Knowledge of seal design and technologies. (Face Seals, Lip Seals, etc.) Excellent grasp of first principles in mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics.
  • Attitude: Must naturally espouse Svante values and believe in our Goals and Objectives.
  • Education: Engineering to, at least, degree level.

Be part of a team that is tackling one of the largest challenges of our generation. As a Svante employee, you will apply your talents in ways that make a difference in our world by directly contributing towards technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
