The Role of Machine Structures Designer
Level Reports to: Machine Structures Leader
Department: Core Product Technology Development

The Rotary Adsorbent Machine (RAM) structure is the framework from which all of the RAM sub-systems are suspended and located. The design of the RAM structure is critical to the success of a Svante carbon capture system and is therefore designated as a core center of competency.

The Machine Structures Designer (MSD) has delivery responsibility for the structural design of Svante RAM’s. The MSD will have an excellent knowledge of materials, structures, manufacturing and joining techniques from traditional to leading edge technologies.

Under the guidance of the Machine Product Manager and in collaboration with the Machine Structures Leader and the other technology group centers of competency, the MSD will evolve concept designs into prototype and production designs using a combination of simulation and physical testing. The MSD will take responsibility for the completion of virtual designs and validation of RAM structures.

Working within the framework of Svante Values and Goals the MSD and team will be responsible to deliver all technical data required for scoping, development, design, manufacture and implementation of RAM’s. The MSD will be responsible for the preparation of this technical data and will ensure it is delivered in the form of technology packages to machine development teams to meet project requirements.

As resource to the Ram Product Leads (RPL’s), the Machine Structures team will translate the core product technology designs into manufacturing drawings and documentation with qualified fabrication partners/suppliers and manage the supply chain to deliver RAM projects.

Together with Supply Chain and the RPL, the Machine Structures team will control and manage the suppliers of components and sub-system machine parts and manage the build, integration and testing of the RAM at the machine manufacturers site (Factory Acceptance Tests).

The Machine Structures Team will create service documentation, and in coordination with the RPL train customer service personnel and support machine breakdowns within the warranty period and, potentially, beyond as a revenue and profit centre.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  1. Deliver Engineering and Technology Packages and resources (ETP) to the Machine Division within agreed targets and requirements.
  2. Develop and maintain a risk register for RAM structures.
  3. Develop and maintain design decision records (DDR) and design for manufacture and assembly evaluations (DFMA) with manufacturing source input.
  4. Develop qualification methodologies for RAM structures. (DVPsoR, FMEA, PFMEA)
  5. Qualify materials, designs and methodologies for RAM implementations.
  6. When working with external customers the MSD will create and manage the RAM product document set including (not limited to):
    • Manufacturing documentation including:
      • CAD models
      • Technical drawings
      • Specifications
    • Structures product cost management
    • Structures DFMA
    • Structures DFMEA
    • Structures DVPSoR
    • Risk register
    • Issues list
    • FAT and SAT sign-off lists

Key Qualifications:

  • Experience: At least 5 years of technology development in a design role within rapidly growing new technology fields. Ideally this should be within technologies similar to Svante.
    Proven experience of advancing technology from an immature to advanced state is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge: Excellent grasp of first principles in mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics.
  • Attitude: Must naturally espouse Svante values and believe in our Goals and Objectives.
  • Education: Engineering diploma or certificate.
